Orthodontics

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics

The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics is a branch of Dental science that deals with the developmental and positional anomalies (irregular) of the teeth and jaws which affects the oral health and aesthetics.Itinvolves moving teeth with their alveolar bone in an intentional way to improve esthetics, function, and oral health.

Orthodonticsplays a vital role in understanding the craniofacial growth, development of the dentition and occlusion. It also formulates diagnosis and treatment plan for the same. Prevention and correction of the facio-skeletal and occlusal anomalies are a very significant part of the treatment protocol that is being implemented in the department.

The Department consists of a talented and experienced group of faculty who dedicated their careers to the orthodontic profession.

First Orthodontic consultation should not be later than 7 years of age

Orthodontic treatment is done with fixed & removable appliances. Fixed Orthodontic appliances use different braces to correct malaligned teeth.

Metal braces use metal brackets with metal wires that facilitate tooth movements to straighten crooked teeth.

Ceramic Braces are the same as metal braces but are made of tooth coloured ceramic material. The brackets match the tooth colour making them less visible compared to traditional metal braces.

Self-ligating braces are similar to traditional braces, apart from the fact that there are no ligature wires & bands. The ligature wire is replaced by a component called the archwire which is attached to the self-ligating bracket to facilitate movements.

A functional/orthodontic appliance that enhances the neuromuscular environment, promotes mandibular and maxillary growth, and expands the soft tissue envelope on the affected side may be used in young patients.

Apart from the routine treatments, the department uses various advanced technologies such as Software-NemoCeph for Diagnosis, Treatment Planning and Treatment Progress

We also aim at

  • Intercepting Certain habits like thumb sucking, tongue thrusting etc., are corrected by using various habit breaking appliances
  • Managing  facial disproportions, requiring Orthognathic surgeries or Distraction Osteogenesis
  • Treating CLCP and Syndromic cases.
  • Correcting and managing TMDs
  • Managing  cases of Sleep Apnea
  • Treating  Occlusal disharmony
  • Using Lingual bracket system
  • Orthodontic Bone Anchorage Devices – Mini Implants, Zygomatic implants, bone plates are also one of the treatment options implemented in achieving favorable treatment outcomes.
  • Rendering Clear aligner treatment.
  • Rendering Accelerated Orthodontics – Corticotomy, Wilckodontics, piezocision.
  • In addition, adjunctive Orthodontic procedures are done in association with other departments like Oral Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, Periodontics and Prosthodontics in patients as required for best results.

We have an elaborate under graduate and post graduate clinic that helps the students to hone their skills and be competent in the aforesaid specialty.

An evidence-based approach to diagnosis and treatment planning is emphasized throughout the program, as are the highest ethical standards.

To all of you who visit us – as a patient, parent, student, or colleague – we look forward to a positive and enriching experience.
