Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

The department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Vydehi Institute of Dental Sciences is closely associated with Vydehi hospital in management of complex craniofacial diseases and deformities.

Equipped with the state-of-the-art armamentarium, the department trains both under graduates and post-graduates. It is one of the leading departments in Karnataka in terms of quantum of handling major craniofacial surgery cases. The treatment facilities include management of craniofacial trauma and fractures including reconstruction, surgical management of head and neck pathology including benign tumours and their post surgical reconstruction including microvascular reconstruction, temporomandibular joint surgery & salivary gland pathology removal. In conjunction with the Dept of Orthodontics, dentofacial deformity corrections are routinely undertaken using orthognathic surgical procedures and distraction osteogenesis.

The wide variety of clinical material forms an excellent platform for teaching of both undergraduates and Post graduates. The 3rd and 4th year BDS students are allotted faculty on a 1:1 ratio during their clinical training thus ensuring a dedicated interactive session with “Hands on” training. This helps improve their clinical acumen along with the theoretical knowledge. All interns posted to the department are trained in assisting in minor surgical procedures, getting an exposure to OTs and wards thus familiarising them with the different facets of the speciality.

MDS in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery commenced from 2011 with three candidates. Their training includes regular chair-side discussions, case presentations, seminars, journal club presentations, periodic tests and preclinical work including cadaver dissection. They are exposed to extensive surgical work in the department, where over 150 cases are operated under general anaesthesia each year. In addition the residents are posted to the associated departments in the hospital including casualty, anaesthesia, oncosurgery, neurosurgery and ICU for exposure in these allied fields.

The hall mark of training in this department is the focus on “Hands-on” training especially in major cases under general anaesthesia. At the end of the course these post graduate students are well versed in dealing with maxillofacial surgery cases independently. The students are also encouraged to present posters and papers in National conferences and prepare case reports and research studies for publication in peer reviewed journals, thus, preparing them for their future academic and professional career.

Mission

The mission of the department is to provide scientifically backed and ethically reinforced treatment with patients well being as the top priority and train postgraduates to independently perform surgical work after passing out from the institution.
