UG : The wide variety of clinical material forms an excellent platform for teaching of both undergraduates and Post graduates. The 3rd and 4th year BDS students are allotted faculty on a 1:1 ratio during their clinical training thus ensuring a dedicated interactive session with “Hands on” training. This helps improve their clinical acumen along with the theoretical knowledge. All interns posted to the department are trained in assisting in minor surgical procedures, getting an exposure to OTs and wards thus familiarising them with the different facets of the speciality.

PG : MDS in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery has commenced from the academic year 2011-2012 with three candidates. Their training includes regular chair-side discussions, case presentations, seminars, journal club presentations, periodic tests and preclinical work including cadaver dissection. They are exposed to extensive surgical work in the department where over 150 cases are operated under general anaesthesia each year. In addition the residents are posted to the associated departments in the hospital including casualty, anaesthesia, oncosurgery, plastic surgery, ENT, neurosurgery and General surgery for exposure in these allied fields.

The practical training in MDS incorporates assisting the faculty in minor and major surgical procedures before being allowed to independently perform these procedures under guidance. The hall mark of training in this department is the focus on “Hands-on” training especially in major cases under general anaesthesia. At the end of the course these post graduate students are well versed in dealing with maxillofacial surgery cases independently once they are on their own. The students are also encouraged to present posters and papers in National conferences and prepare case reports and research studies for publication in peer reviewed journals, thus, preparing them for their future academic and professional career.

Clinic description : The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery provides a myriad of services. Rare syndromes such as Eagles syndrome which involves an elongated styloid process are operated with a novel aesthetic intraoral approach which allows fast and scarless recovery of the patient. Being fully equipped with a microvascular microscope allows the department to perform highly advanced microvascular flap reconstruction post resection of malignant as well as benign pathologies. Besides these services a representative of the department is present round the clock in the department of emergency medicine for the prompt stabilization and immediate management of patients brought to the emergency for any reason affecting the maxillofacial region, further these patients are taken up under local or general anaesthesia for the appropriate management by adhering to strict operating protocols.
